Choosing comfort, confidence, and timeless style for your in-home newborn session
As a Hamilton-based newborn photographer specialising in in-home newborn sessions, I know how important it is to feel both comfortable and confident during your shoot—especially in those tender weeks after birth.
Newborn sessions typically happen when baby is 5–21 days old, which means you're likely still in recovery mode. Your body is adjusting, your wardrobe might feel a little unfamiliar, and that’s completely normal. My goal is to help you feel at ease in whatever you choose to wear—because comfort and connection always come first.
Dresses: The MVP of Newborn Sessions
A flowy dress is almost always a winning choice. It’s easy to wear, flatters every body, and gives a soft, timeless look to your photos. Look for relaxed fits that don’t cling to your stomach or hips. Natural fabrics like cotton, linen, or soft knits work beautifully and photograph well in a home setting.
Plus, they’re easy to move in—which is a bonus when you’re feeding, rocking, or cuddling your baby between shots.
Not a Dress Person? No Problem.
If dresses aren’t your thing, go for comfy lounge wear, knit pants or something with a stretchy waistband, paired with a neutral tee or blouse. This kind of outfit still looks lovely and relaxed while allowing you to feel more like yourself. Soft textures, natural tones, and simple styling always work best.
Let’s Talk Colour
For my in-home newborn sessions in Hamilton, I usually recommend a light, neutral, or earthy colour palette.
Think warm creams, soft browns, muted greens, or dusky pinks. These tones are flattering, timeless, and don’t cast strong colours onto baby’s skin (a common issue with bright clothes).
But that doesn’t mean you need to avoid colour altogether. If you love a pop of colour, try working it in with intention. Stick with softer versions of your favourite shades—or consider keeping your top neutral and adding colour with pants or accessories. Many images will feature baby cradled on your chest, so it’s best to keep that area free of strong, bold colours.

Undergarments & Breastfeeding-Friendly Tips
If you’re breastfeeding, button-down dresses, wrap styles, or dresses with easy access are ideal. Steer clear of off-the-shoulder designs if you’re wearing a nursing bra, as those wide straps can be tricky to hide and adjust.
This stage of postpartum often means your milk has just come in, so choosing supportive undergarments is a must. I always recommend reliable, comfortable underwear—not just for support, but also to help prevent any leaks from showing through, especially when wearing lighter fabrics.
That said, please don’t stress over any wardrobe mishaps. From leaks to bra strap slips, I’ve seen it all—and as your photographer, I’ll always be prepared to help. These sessions are all about real life, and nothing is too much or too embarrassing. Promise.
Above All, Choose Comfort
This season of life is raw, beautiful, and deeply personal. The best outfit is one that lets you move freely, cuddle your baby, and feel like yourself. Whether that’s a soft knit set or a breezy dress, trust that you’ll look beautiful—because you are.
